What year is my motor?

I have a Johnson Seahorse 8hp Model # J8SRLCRM and Serial # E5884815. Can anyone tell me the year and recommend a parts/repair manual that is user friendly for the home mechanic with OK (not excellent and not totally ignorant either) knowlegde of gas (Car and small) engines? It should contain enough info to completely disasemble and rebuild this motor, drivetrain, electircs, etc. and hopefully troubleshoot issues as well.

Thanks for any help. I sure need to get this thing running again as the lake is calling!

J - Johnson
8 - 8hp
SR - Sail, Rope start
L - Longshaft (fits 20" transom)
CR - '84
M - Model run code.

By far the best manual is the Factory service manual. It's a few bucks more but it's worth it. you can get it from:
kencook.com
marineengine.com
theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com
maxrules.com

Anything that's unclear in it, we can make clear here. :)

Re: What year is my motor?

I appreciate the quick and useful response and teh welcome! I picked this motor up off a friend for $150 with tank and had to spend another $150 on a power pack. The guy who did that work also did a basic service and stripped out the top spark plug hole. It seats OK without blowing out but seeps fuel mix. The exhaust hole between the fins is also seeping quite a bit of mix when I manage to get it running for 2 minutes when it konks out and will not restart. She ran good for 10 to 15 hours but then... Not sure if it from the spark plug seeping or running rich or ? The gas and delivery system are good.

To complicate matters, the little keep pin that guides teh pull start shifted in the hoe and rubbed on the flywheel? creating aluminum dust which no doubt got sucked into the carb. Maybe that clogged something which is causing teh hard start and lack of running?
any advice would be great. :)
