what year is my motor?

When I bought my boat I was told it had an 88HP 1988 2 stroke motor. I was reading through the manual, and found the description of the tags and "introduces" code.

I don't have a riveted tag, but there is a sticker with the following on the clamp under the motor.

VJ88MSLCER
R8151393

There is also a silver plug on the top of the head that has the second number from the tag stamped on it. R8151393

If I follow the code, I have a 1994 engine?

I have decarbed the motor, replaced the wires and plugs. It still runs a little rough. The 1988 motor calls for .40 gap on the plugs and 1989+ calls for a .30 gap

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Re: what year is my motor?

Hi NO7
Your motor is a 1989 model, the CE is the date, the R is a model run code. I think it has to do with paint, trim decals, etc. Easy enough to get confused. Glad to hear you got a manual.

Re: what year is my motor?

Thank you, That explains why I'm still running rough... I had a feeling

One more question. I purchased the Johnson service manual for a 1988 motor. Should I bite the bullet and get a 1989 manual, or are the two years pretty much the same.

Thanks again, and have a great holiday!

Mike
