This worked for an other guy, so I thought I'd try it.
it's a:
DT40, 04003-714826

I tried http://store.brownspoint.com/dt40.asp
but not sure if I should go by the first three numbers in the second half of the serial number (714) or what. If so, I'm guessing 1987 ?

Got it as a gift but there is no tilt switch on the outboard or the control box (weird! - even though the mechanics are there) so I have to look for a used control box with the switch.

many thanks!

714001 is where the 1987 model serial numbers start. the 7 is year and the rest is serial # so anything above is still a 87

now I just have to find a used control box. I'm not sure if all old Suzuki boxes will work, cause I've seen both 6 pin and 8 pin harnesses on Ebay.

I wirted my own switch in at motor so I could move motor when towing and locking in transome saver. you could do the same for control head, or just but a replacement handle that has the switch in it. I can find which color wires you need, have manual

I was thinking of actually just installing a 3-way switch on the console, but I was afraid of getting into the existing box and messing up what the harness is supposed to be wired to.

The switch at the motor itself wouldn't work because it?s a small pontoon boat and I find myself constantly adjusting the tilt depending on the speed (short boat).

I'm baffled at why there isn't a switch anywhere on the outboard.
