1973 Evinrude 6HP 6303 J01265

I'm not sure if this motor has the original carb or not. The carb carries the part numbber of 326852. Can someone look up this number to see if this is the right carb?? Carb has only a low speed idle needle (fixed high speed).

There are other issues with this motor as well. It appears that a lower unit extension was added.
I bought an impeller for the year on the button but the impeller was the wrong one. The one I ordered from Nappa was way too large. I kinnda suspect the lower unit was swapped. I guess I can drop the L/U again and see what number is stamped on the water pump housing. That may point me in the right direction to I.D. the year of the lower unit, if indeed it was swapped. Funny thing is, the lower unit castings mate up perfectly. Unless Nappa has their numbers crossed, it's still a mystery.

Xcus.... I suspect that number you gave is simply a casting number? The number doesn't exist in the parts book or the price book. The description you gave of the carb sounds right.

The 1973 6hp was originally equipped with a metal water pump housing that used a larger type impeller (OMC #277181 Lg Imp - superceeded up to #434424 Lg Imp). Cost about $20.00.

The confusion set in when OMC upgraded the water pumps to the plastic housing that incorporated a stainless steel cup, using a smaller impeller.

The smaller impeller is OMC #387361. Cost about $20.00.

The original water pump assy (metal housing) OMC part number was #382797 (Complete kit with Lg Imp).

The above was superceeded up to the new type water pump (plastic housing) OMC #393391 (Complete kit with Sm Imp), lists for about $42.00.

That should solve your confusion problem. If you have a problem finding the correct w/pump, I have two left in my remaining stock. ReevesJ32@aol..com

Joe, I can't thank you enough for this information. I kinnda thought something was changed somewhere down the line.

I finished this motor today. I rebuilt the fuel pump, carb, replaced the points, condensers and coils. After a carb pre-set, it started on the second pull and ran like a dream. I just love these older JohnnyRudes.

Thanks again for all of your help. BTW, my Bro'In Law thanks you too.
