What year Merc

I just bought a boat, motor and trailer today, all in excellent shape. I cannot find the model and serial number on the 15 hp motor. The boat and trailer are 1992 and it looks like the motor is about the same year also, the owner didn't know. I have a 1996 8 hp that is the same as far as controls, choke and so on but the decals on the 15 hp have gray pinstriping in the decal. Also to drain the lower unit it has the standard lower plug but all I can find for the upper is a screw which is in the regular place the upper plug would be, I don't want to mess anything up by removing it when I change the lower unit oil, on my 8 hp the plugs are about the same size. Thanks for any info.

Need the serial no to tell the year. Look on the transom mount for a plate with it on it. If the plate is missing look for a round welsh plug on top of the motor with it stamped in it. It will be 7 digits and may or may not start with a letter

Thanks, one more question on the lower unit. All there is for the top that allows air to get in and to see the oil come out when it is full is a small screw vs. the normal plug that is about the same size as the lower plug that seems to be the norm on my other motors?
