Was told at 1 time it was a 1989, but when it comes to parts they tell me it isn't. I don't know. Serial number A112107. And I do know that's right cause I checked it over and over again.

Re: What year Mercury 9.8?

maxrules.com has a guide to merc. serial numbers.

I've always considered this reference to be accurate, but I can't guarantee it.

However that site says the "A" serial numbers are 9.9, not 9.8. Also, the "A" serial numbers start, in 1986 with A197xxx in the US and A708xxx in Canada and go up from there - I don't see an A series s/n as low as the one you have. 1988 and later 9.9's start with B in the US and A729xxx in Canada.

The lowest s/n for a 9.8, 1963 is 147xxxx. The last 9.8 listed is 1985 with s/n beginning with 662xxxx.

You've got the right number of digits - 7. This chart doesn't show any mercs. made outside of the US and Canada - maybe that's it.

What does the motor look like?

Interesting - if you figure it out, I'd be interested in hearing what you learn.

I have mercury 9.8 with ser. A176723. It's a 1985. Go to mercury parts express and type in your serial no.

The motor has the brownish color decals and looks just like my 1980, but the 1980 has blue decals. But the serial number is correct as it's been checked over and over again.

Serial number works at Mercury site, for parts list. Does not provide year description though.

Brown band sounds like an 84-85.
