what year mercury /small running problem

9.8 mercury was told 1988 sn# 5851270
was also told runs great small problem shuts down when running starts back up, but don't like the full throttle this is when it shut down,(most of the time) been looking on the site(GREAT INFO) ,thinking maybe the fuel fliter ? thanks for any help

That motor is a 1980/1981 motor.

Sounds like you may have a fuel isue, at higher speeds. Don't overlook the fuel tank, and the fuel line/bulb. Could be a clogged pickup strainer, defective bulb, deteriorating fuel, clogged fuel filter, defective fuel pump, or simply dirty carbs (plugged high speed jet), etc.....

As a test, while running at high speed have an assistant squeeze the fuel bulb. Does the symptom go away?

yes, it will keep running if i pump the bulb
need to get manual for it, which one should i get?

i did cut the fuel line drop in to the tank ,(on the water first time out with motor)thinking clogged in the tank, plan on replacing the fuel line from tank to motor this week end
