what yearis this motor?? and what carb goes on it???

Iv got a 40hp merc. s/n-3585874 cant find it anywhere? some say its a 73 some say its a 83?? it has both electric and pull start. 2cyc 1 carb. and what is the correct carb for this motor?? the bowl says 1368-5036 that the orginal carb and it dont work. i put a different carb on it from another 40hp and it runs good. except under a load, then it stalls? when ya put it in gear in the water? runs fine on land in a trash can underload?? i know its a fuel problem just got to figure it ou?? Any help?

Original carburetor should be #4853A1 It's a WMK-8 carb ( WMK-8 should be stamped on the carb ).

Always best to use the original carb, as it's made for this engine....

A good cleaning and maybe a carb kit and it should work fine as long as it's not corroded away....
Repair kit should be Mercury #1395-51091 .
