What years are compatable to a 1998 9.9 hp Mercury?

I'm going to be adding a tiller and shift assembly to a unit that had the assembly removed by previous owner as he had it modified for controls. When looking for parts, what series of years are compatible for a 1998 9.9? This is a 2 cycle outboard. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

i'm not sure what year ranges but do know that when looking for parts for my 98 9.9 4 stroke merc i have better luck matching it to a yamaha in that year.
