what yr. is my motor. Serial# unknown

I have a 150 HP(6 cyl) Mercury outboard and I can't find the serial # plate anywhere on the motor or on the mounting bracket. I was told by the previous owner that it was a 1994 but I would like to know for sure. Is there any way of telling the yr. without having the serial #. Can anyone help.

The outer cowling covers are all different. What does it look like ? colour of bands.. colour of text etc..

The text color is on the cover is white with a red stripe on each side, The bands are 3 gray colors starting with dark gray, then a light gray, then a lighter gray. the cowling under the cover has 2.5 litre in red text with a red stripe on each side. Hope this info helps

Looking down on top of the engine on the port side is a Welch plug. It looks like a small automobile freeze plug. It should have the engine serial nr. stamped on it. If ya find it, get back to us and tell us what it is.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

I checked the welch plug you mentioned Hooty, but it had no #'s stamped on it. any other ideas would be appreciated.

That do make it tough. No numbers on the Welch plug sounds like a replacement powerhead. I understand tha "would like to know for sure". Do you have a manual for it? If not, you might assume it's a '94 and get a factory manual for that year and compare it to the manual. As far as the cowling color, it could have been changed to. My carbureted '87 has a 2.5 efi cowling.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Hooty, I'm going to get a manual and check. I was wondering if part numbers could help solve this puzzle. I noticed the heads had #'s stamped on them or are they interchangeable with many yr. motors. I also talked to the previous owner again and he owned the motor since 98, and he didn't change the cowlings but he did change the waterpump twice and ordered the parts for a 94 and they were the same, again the w/pump might fit many years too. The color of the bands that I described in an earlier post, do they match a 94 does anyone know? thanks for your time.If anyone else out there has any thoughts on this, feel free

Hooty, If your still out there, I'm having trouble finding a factory manual. I did get a repair manual but it didn't show much. Do you know any web sites that I could order one from.
