what yr(s) johnson???

anyone know what year model this is??? no plates... or numbers on the carb...2cylinders twist throttle 20hp...i can get it for 45$...put up with impeller needing replac. and was cutting out after getting warm..kis it even worth 45$? any reply appreciated

no plate? look on the bracket with the clamps, there should be two numbers post both and ill tell you the year.

Hi lonsbama. I circled the location of the ID plate. Looks like its been painted over, but I believe you have a mid to late 60's FD model 20hp. I'm guessing it's around a '65-'68. I just got a '66 FD 20 hp the other day. Mine is an FD-20 made in '66 an FD-19 would be a '65 and a FD-18 would be a '64, and so on. I say go for it if she has good compression. we can walk you through any work you may need to do on her. hope this helps.

No problem losnbama. I looked a little closer at your first pic, and based on the triangular shaped choke knob, I'm guessing you have a '65 FD-19, but just a guess. The good part is that you can get virtually everything you may need to bring her back to life right here at iboats. I'm about half way through getting mine back up and running. So far so good (except for the two screws on the shift rod linkage window which will not budge no doubt thanks to the PO attempt to "repair" something in the LU :/ ). i looked on marineengine.com they don't have a 20hp untill 1966 everything before that was a 18hp for your FD'S your FD'S changed to 20hp in 1966

Yea, that what I have found too. The 20hp FD-20 started production in 1966 and the 25's started in 1969 and from 1969 - 1973, they had all three of the 22 cube twins. In 1974, the 18 and 20 was discontinued, in favor of the newer and redesigned 15. I believe the only difference between the 18 and 20, was the carburetion, but the 25, had several other modifications, like the pistons, carburetor, head, crank and exhaust system. It was a souped up version of the old 20hp and revved up higher. In 1977, the old 22 cube 25hp was replaced with the larger 31.8 cube model, which was completely re-designed. I like the old 22 cube version. It's quite a bit lighter for the horsepower, but my favorite, is the '57 model 18's.

You clean that motor up, it looks like it should be a decent motor for you. It looks like it sat for a while. A good tune up is a must.

Awesome! How did you talk him down from $45? LOL. I thought I got a good deal today when I got a like new pinion gear for mine today for only $30, but you win hands down! Let the tinkering begin!

no fire on the # 2 plug wire..the insulation is cracked in several places this motor is gonna take a while

Hello again losnbama. I would highly recommend you replace the s'plug wires all together since you're going to need to remmove the fly wheel to replace the points. It's super easy and will make a world of difference. You have to use 7mm copper core wires along with two, 90 degree clip on boots. NAPA sells the wire for about $3 a foot. 7 ft. is plenty for both wires. They twist on to the posts in the coils. Then you just strip about 3/4" of insulation off the other end and crimp or solder on the boot and voila! new spark plug wires. The new wires, along with new plugs and points and condensers will give you an entirely new ignition system for about $40! It may sound a little scary at first, but you really can do it for yourself with ease. Once you've fixed this ignition system you'll be able to fix virtually any OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) ignition from the mid 50's - mid 70's! These simple little magento ignitions are one of the reasons love these old motors so much. They're super durable, reliable, cheap and easy to work on when compared to modern electronic ignitions which are less user friendly and cannot really be serviced, only replaced. Check out these links. They'll give you tons of info and let you know what to expect. They may not be for your exact model, but all OMC of this era were virtually identical (yet another reason folks love these old guys so much). Watch the youtube videos. Start around episode 17. They're fun and super informative. Keep us posted. I'll let you know when I get my 20 hp running. Parts should be here Tuesday!
