I need to buy a new group 27 battery. Wal-Mart has Ever Start how is this brand. Which is a good buy for the money. Anybody know how to read the dates on the batterys? Thanks Joe

Years ago, my Grand-dad,(Bless his soull) Always said that they should sell batteries by the pound! Back then he was probably right. Now with new technology Im sure that wouldnt hold true anymore. Ive used the everstart Batteries with good success, and you cant beat WallMart if you have to take things back. Crazy Charley is right to, the Natilus batteries are good too. Ive used them in the past and had good service out of them too. Im getting ready to buy batteries and will probably buy at Wall Mart.

Re: What's a good deep cycle battery

Joe I to was faced with the same decision. Last friday went fishing and one battery laid down after about three hrs of trolling so I came out of the water and drove to wal-mart and got me two everstart maxx. I chose these because of the availability of exchanging at any time or hour of the day. I can also get free replacement up threw first 18 months.
BTW we went back out sat and I trolled for about 6-1/2 hrs and switched over to my trolling battery to see if it would start my engine and to charge her back up and she hit without a hitch.

So go wal-mart my good man

Re: What's a good deep cycle battery

It depends on the type of boating, if this deep cycle battery is for a trailered bass boat, then any type of wet cell battery will work fine. If this is being used on a larger boat as a secondary battery, an AGM or gel battery would be the way to go. Personally I will NEVER go back to wet cell batteries.
My AGM batteries can be stored on there side without loosing any power. I have used an AGM battery in my sailboat for the last 3 years, It is charged by a solar panel and an alternator, OCCASIONALLY I hook shore power up. During the winter months the battery is disconnected and stored in my sailboat ( which is kept outside in the cold weather) During the winter months it looses almost 2 volts (14.9-13.1) and is quickly charged again with the solar panel.
Regardless of which type of deep cell you get, try to limit the amount of times you completely discharge the battery. ALWAYS try to keep the battery above 50% of its capacity. THERE are no batteries (except maybe lithium Polymer) that do not have a memory)
