I looked at a 1975 Holiday 22, which is 21' 3' long ?, tonight.

165 mercrusier MC1 outdrive, had not been run in 5 years but is looks very clean, not able to wet test motor, owner won't run it.

Original paint looks very poor, floor and transom shot, needs a complete interior, trailer has 5 new tires but needs paint.

Owners asking $900, says bottom is $700.

I walked away

What would this boat be worth to you?

Re: What's it worth to you?

Does the motor turn over, or is it froze up? Is the block cracked?

If the motor isn't froze up or cracked I'd go $700. Lots of work but it's a lot of boat. I love the 6 cylinder chevy's. You can get a new outdrive for $1200 or so. That's brand new from SEI. Just thinking worse case here. Doesn't look like you get to test anything.

I might be a lot of work. Are you into a big project? Got any pictures to help us?

Myself, as long as the engine isn't locked up, the plugs don't look water soaked, the gears under the outdrive cap look ok and the boat appears to be relatively unmolested - $700 would be doable. For that amount transom, deck, interior and paint is expected in most cases.

But that's me.

I really think its a Gamble. Wont try to run motor?? I would figure it is shot and sounds like a complete rebuild needed for the boat its self. $ 700 bucks is a lot to just experiment with. Need to compression check Engine if he wont do that then walk away The thing I do not like about I/Os is you have very little options for replacment I have a 22 holiday with a 200 johnson and realy enjoy it. Has cost me very little except maint. .Its is also a 1975

Give me a little time and i'll post some pics.

The floor is shot. I was able to pull up areas and view the sheet foam with out breaking the wood.

The vinyl is all trashed.

The transom was solid until the bottom 1/4, my knife would go 1/4 to 1/2" with very little pressure.

The boat looks like a twin sister only with an I/O. Pleated sides in the mustard yellow and ill bet the top of the bow has white pleated vinyl. These are great safe boats when finished with high sides to keep children in. I have photo bucket photos if interested.. pugetsound PW = 55boatnut

Re: What's it worth to you?

For me.....

I would assume that the engine is junk. You really can't assume otherwise unless otherwise happens (like get it running). So that said, you have a sweet Holiday hull that needs to be entirely rebuilt, everything, total gut job. And, it's sitting on a trailer that looks solid but needs work. New tires is a big bonus!

I'd have a tough time coughing up the $700, but, I am just about the lowest of all the bottom feeders. If it were me, I'd be offering something in the $500 - $600 range with the idea that I have a total rebuild ahead including something to re-power this boat.

Here is how I'd play it...

Give him a call...

"Hey Holiday seller. Thanks for showing me your boats the other night. Listen, I like the bigger one and I think I can make it work. I have $600 cash in my wallet and I can be at your place in an hour. Do you think we can swing it?"

Or you can go Vulcan.:D

Have fun man!

Re: What's it worth to you?

One big bonus is that the Holiday is already set up for a Merc outdrive.

That puts you one step ahead of the game, I saw a 4.3 Merc the other day on craigslist for $300, the boat was a glasser and was hit by a car, motor in perfect shape.

I like that 22' rig, great for the big lakes and plenty of room.:)

Id love a chance at a 22ft Holiday.
If you go into it knowing it will be a year or so before she's on the water, abd have a place to keep her and work on her then why not?

Within the first 45 seconds of motoring my boat away from the dock on my first launch, every dollar, every sore muscle, drop of sweat and bloody knuckles were instantly erased.

Re: What's it worth to you?

agree with cheapboatkev...................

plus 5 new trailer tires are about $300, so that cost isn't in the picture, and replacing Merc, as mentioned, isn't that crazy, if needed

sweet hull....................Gluvit, plywood, rivets, flooring, paint, probably some electrical and................."every sore muscle, drop of sweat and bloody knuckles"

I just had to replace a frickin pump in my septic for near $600

I rather have that boat!!

Re: What's it worth to you?

I got no problem with $700. Make him prove that motor is not froze OR use it as leverage to drive the price down. I really want it but if the motor is froze up......

Might pay to wait also. Price could go down, or you might lose it. If you want it whats a hundred bucks either way? Make him prove that motor is not obviously junk. My .02 cents. Good luck

Re: What's it worth to you?

Had a busy day yesterday, pulled an engine / tranny for my wagon and fixed 3 out of 4 bleed screws on my old rover. I saved the hardest for last, screw is snapped off. Trying to fix this so we can get out on the water today. My towing wagon lost its fuel pump last week.

Back to boats - I'm going to let this one brew a little more, wife says "I have enough projects". She wants a boat that's ready to splash. She wanted to look at a Mark Twain 140 I/O, Needed a lot, My wife is starting to get the Alum Boat thing. I keep repeating the mantra, Starcraft, Starcraft.....:p

The 21 Holiday would be awesome, tons of room. Still on the fence on I/O's, I like outboards, but from what everybody says this 6 cyl 165 is the best of the bunch. I really wonder why someone would try and sell an I/O and not want to prove it works. It would maximize your selling cost.

I really think a 18 SS would be the ultimate for our boating needs. they are harder to come by, and with-in budget makes it even harder.

We are going on vacation in 2 weeks and was was hoping to have a new bigger boat, but I know we can get on the water with what we have.

Thanks everyone for all the input. Now its time more coffee and brake fluid:D
