1989 Merc 70 Oil Injection. I'm not too experienced with larger ourboards but I just got this one for a deal and it looks like something might be missing from the transom bracket hydraulics. The previous owner has no idea as she inherited it from her dad.
Pics are online at http://www.grantbrown.ca/boat/
What is the part called and where do I buy one used?
Also, is there any reason that the engine wont go out of tilt position? The lock is not engaged.

Thanks
Grant Brown

You're right RB, there oughta be a manual relief valve on the pump.

c/6
Hooty

Re: What's missing from this motor?

Thanks for all the info. I got stuck doing yard work all day so I couldn't get back at the boat.
Maybe on Monday afternoon.
The serial number on the transom bracket is 0A739874. Says built in Canada (I'm near Vancouver) so that sounds right.

Grant, if you look at the diagram, # 12 is the Manual Release Valve. If you unscrew this slightly, the motor should come down to the vertical position. Do not try to take it out, just open it up a bit. You may need to push down on the lower unit to get it to come down, as the tilt tube may be frozen up. But lets at least see if we can get it down and go from there.

Number 5 is the tilt tube rod that goes through # 2. Sometimes these stick and will not allow the unit to come down, but we will get to that later..

They only made this engine between 1987-89. Iv got a 1988 model. Your serial number is a 1987 model I believe. Also if you have the engine down DO NOT open the nut where you add fluid to the trim system it is pressurized in the down position.
