Ok guys, you have all been a great help getting my powerhead ready to mount to the mid section.

3 questions-

1. I accidently mixed up the way that the flywheel bolts onto the belt sprocket. I have used a pencil as advised by "Laddies" to see when no1 piston is TDC. I then removed the flywheel and repositioned it to what i think is correct. Now the distributor hits its timing mark when no1 piston is at TDC. Have i done this correctly?

2. How do i get the engine to stop turning so I can re-torque the flywheel?

3. In my mid section the square exhaust pipe has what appears to be a divider flap. It is very loose and the bolts at either side can move up and down... Is this correct, should this happen?

Many thanks again guys and thanks for reading!

Regards

Stan :)

If you don't have a flywheel holder, use care and with someone holding a large screwdriver against the starter shaft and the ring gear teeth tighten it, most of the divider plate in the exhaust that you are asking about broke years ago and the holes are plugged with bolts. I don't think the plates have been available for years--Bob

Thanks for the prompt reply Bob, are you saying that this divider plate is not required?

If so I could just remove it and plug the bolt holes with jb weld...

It doesn't appear to be broken however it looks like it has been designed to move.

Regards

Stan

I've also heard tell that you can have a helper hold the flywheel with oven mits while you're tightening - although I've never tried that method myself. When I tightened mine, I wrapped a rope around the flywheel and anchored the rope ends on the clamps typically found on the top sides of the boat for docking. It seemed to work pretty well when I had to do it by myself.

Re: Whats next with my merc? 1150 1972 inline

I have overcome the flywheel dilema by using a rope and tying it through the distributer mount. Thanks for you help there guys...

Upon further inspection of my inventory I have found the plate that bolts between the powerhead and the midsection to be badly corroded. I am unsure as to whether i will be able to secure a good seal stopping water going into exhaust... I am left with litterally 1.2mm of flat surface to create a seal between water/exhaust. Can you buy this plate or am I once again doomed lol. If nayone can supply me there is an e-mail addy below...hint hint

Can you post up a picture of the plate stant? I am willing to bet that Clams would know how to get you one. Either by fabrication or old motor. You may want to check his profile and go to his ebay info and send him an email or he may just give you his number. Clams specializes in our motors.
