What's the best way to transport my motor while on the transom?

So there's that bar that hangs off of the stern bracket. If I unlock the motor, lift it, raise the bar in to position, lower the motor on it, and lock the motor down it stays and I think that's how the guy who sold the boat said to transport it but somehow we bent the bar (probably forgot to lock it back down after raising it).

Is that truly what that bar is for? I also noticed a locking mechanism higher that locks the motor really high up and seems to do the same thing but I don't know if that's safe. So what's the best way to transport it?

I feel really bad about that bar being bent, it looks like a nightmare to replace.

I realize my terminology may be off so below is a similar motor to help me explain

See the black square tube/bar that is holding your lower unit to a point under the boat? The forward end of that bar is probably attached to the trailer.
THAT is your motor support for transporting. You don't have it marked in your picture.

That's not my motor, it's a similar motor I uploaded to help explain. I don't own that black bar but, if that's the proper support for transporting what are the other parts in my question for?

I'm fairly new to outboard motors, but what you've marked looks like the trim adjustment, tilt lock, etc.

The black bar you say you don't own is a transom saver - buy one.
One end is like a Y that supports the front of your engine at the lower unit/midsection, the other end attaches to your trailer.
It saves your transom extra stress & strain during transport - hence the name.

Yea I'm looking in to the transom saver now. So what are the different tilt locks for? I don't really transport it far, maybe a mile or so to the launch site. Were these originally intended to lock the motor down during transport?

not really framiliar with your exact motor, but most have the "lock" so the motor wont lift itself out of the water when you throttle up in reverse. ( if it works right, it will release in fwd if you hit a submerged surprise) in the up position and locked, it allows you to beach your boat without dragging the motor in the sand....or dragging the skeg at the boat ramp. there could also be a spot for shallow water drive, which is self explanatory.

Ah yes the submerged surprise. Haven't found one of those yet, thank god. Thanks for the info NW!
