A wide-open question I realize, but I'll narrow it down. I'm looking at an older Robalo 22 with a worn-out OMC I/O setup. I have the choice of repowering the whole thing with any brand of remanufactured motor and lower unit, or, rebuilding the transom and putting a 200 hp Yamaha OB on it that I have. (Why am I doing this....? I like the hull.)

What little understanding I have of I/O's is that they are cheaper on gas and cheaper to replace motors. What kind of ballpark figure would it take to repower this boat with an I/O? With the money I've got into the Yamaha and the cost of rebuilding the transom I'm looking at $4k, even doing the work myself. What will $4k get me with a remanufactured I/O power train? Thanks......Ed.

for 4k plus what you pay for the boat you should have no problem finding a boat that runs correctly

4k will not go very far repowering a boat

http://www.nadaguides.com/MarineHom...046&DID=38201&ColorId=&wSec=14&wPr=0&wPg=2004

the 22 robalo has a value based on it running no matter what you do that value will change very littel

if you realy like the boat repower would be the only way to go putting an outboard on the back of and i/o boat is IMHP a bad idea

tommays

The Best, Easiest, Cheapest way to go about it is,
Strip a Donor Boat........
That way you have All the Brackets,+ Stuff that doesn't come with the Complete Drivelines.......

I've seen Used Complete Merc. drivelines for $5000.00 or so.........
I Think New, would be about Twice that..........

Man all depends on what you want to put in. So here is kind of a worst case estimate

Use this to get a sense of engine prices:
http://www.1800runsnew.com/
and this for other components
http://www.mercstuff.com/

Say you go with a drop in Crusader 350 ($4.5K)

Then you need Manifolds (about $1.5k)

Transom Assembly (depends if you can find a used one or not) $2K ish Maybe a lot less if used

Trim pump and rams maybe $1.5K Maybe a lot less if used
Sterndrive (Say $1.5K for a aftermarket or rebuilt)

New gauges, wiring, labor, etc Maybe $3K

So my guess at ballpark when all said and done is $14K or so...

You dialed me right in Ralph. Thanks. And blew me out of the water at the same time.

I'm decent with fiberglas fabrication and I have a friend who has been in that exact business for 40 years and will help if I need it. He has done numerous transom conversions to OB. Clearly I come out much cheaper if I go with the Yamaha. But, I haven't bought the boat yet, so maybe I'd be better off finding a hull already set up for an OB. Thanks.....

That's what I'd do. You should be able to find all kinds of good deals at the end of the season. I'd find something you can drop that Yam O/B right into and go.. shouldn't be too hard.
