Whats the difference between at 2.5L head and a 3.0L head

The reason I ask is I sold a 3.0L head or at least what I thought was a 3.0L head to a guy on ebay. The head I had came off the engine in my 91 Larson. It say 3.0L on the breather cover and the serial number also states it's a 90 model 3.0L. I had posted messages last year about getting water in the oil and finally bought another engine. Anyway they guy emailed me that bought the head and said his machine shop said it was a 2.5L head, that it would bolt up but some of the passages weren't the same. I just wanted to find out the differences before I refund the money.

Thanks,

Is the guy using it for a boat engine or a car? yes to a machine shop it is a 2.5 head they are the same except valve cover mounting. That head will bolt on to all the IRON DUKES but there intake/exaust manifold might not. if you had it advertised as a merc or omc 3.0 for the year he knew what he bought. how much did you get for it? those castings alone are going for 200.00 here in mi! getting hard to find. bob

Thanks, Bob
So the water and oil jackets are the same on the 2.5L and 3.0L heads? I got $100.00 out of the head when I sold it. I really thought it would bring more than that. Might be best to just refund his money and try selling it again.

Thanks again,

There are no oil jackets in that head. oil just drains through to the sump. 2.5 car had a different block then the 3.0 the head cooling appears the same but you cant put a 2.5 car head on a 3.0 block. if the guy bought the head for a 3.o marine engine then that is what he got for 100.00 he has no issues.

Thanks again,

I've emailed the guy back and waiting for a reply. I knew that about the oil draining to the sump, just hadn't thought that one through. I remember now there being holes in each end of the head for the oil to drain. I really don't know what holes he is talking about. I'll just wait and see what the problem is.

Thanks again,
Delos

He did say that he was using in a marine application. What he said is different on the two heads is: 1. the combustion cambers are a little different shape and smaller 2.The valves are smaller 3. the ports were different. Everything else looked the same.

Delos

what motor does he have sounds like a 120hp a 3.0 head will not work with his manifold. as a quess he bought it he owns it, if you take it back make sure he pays shipping! sounds like this guy knows nothing about what he is lookinf for.

Re: Whats the difference between at 2.5L head and a 3.0L head

I must clarify, He is saying the combustion cambers are a different shape and smaller and the valves are smaller on my head. But he did say everything else looked the same as far as how everything bolts up to the head. I am going to buy the head back. I listed it as a 3.0L head but I didn't know the horsepower difference at the time. So I guess this means I had the 120 HP engine. At least I'll know a little more about it when I relist it. Is this head worth anything? This is the first I/O engine I've ever had. I'm not a big GM fan and I'm sure not a marine engine expert by any means.

Is there anything else off the engine that would be worth selling? Pistons, rods, cam etc...?

Sold the harmonic balancer for $25, probably too cheap!

Delos
