What's the difference between marine and automotive distributors?

What makes a marine dist USCG approved where an automotive distributor is not? I tried doing a search and all I could come up with is a lot of arm waving and confusion on how a distributor works. I'm not advocating the installation of an automotive distributor on a marine application, I would just like to know what the actual difference is between say a 70's style points marine distributor and a comparable automotive distributor. Basically the only thing I can think of would be a non-vented cap with a rubber seal at the bottom. There must be more to it..?

No vacuum advance, and sealing as mentioned.

Ayuh,... Basically, the Marine units are Igntion Protected...

Specifically, for the 70s atleast,..
The Marine units don't use vacuum advance like the auto units did at that point in time...
