For almost any points, .018"
The thickness of a piece of a soda can folded over 2 times. (3 layers)

Of course.
I just mentioned the soda can (.006" wall) as solution for someone caught without a set of feelers.

First of all, we need to know which distributor you have.
The Delco distributor use a point gap of .022 and a dwell of 28? to 34?
The Prestolite distibutor use a gap of .016 and a dwell of 39? to 45?
Odd, no where does it say .018, but it would run at .018.
You still need to set the dwell as the final setting, not just the gap. Gap is for preliminary setting only.
Oh, then you have to reset the timing, Dwell effects timing.

for a 488 merc 4 cly????

the proper gap would be .016 or 32 degrees in using a dwell meter. My suggestion would be to change it electronic ignition. Hope that helps?

point gap effects Dwell, Dwell effects timing. Fact of life. Be sure to grease the dist. cam too.

Always set the timing last.
