whats the gph at wot for a 3.0 merc? Are i/o more efficient than outboards? I'm looking at an 18 ft bayliner with an 88 hp evinrude, but I think an I/O 18ft bayliner might be better...

I want to upgrade my 1972 tri hull 50 hp johnson wakeboarding set up, but I don't know if its worth it if the fuel consumption is gonna go way up.

I spend more money on gas than anything else for my boat. Following that, is preventative maintenance. On my I/O (05 3.0L), I can spend a whole day outside on a 3/4 tank of gas (60 Litres approx.) with tubing and cruising anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle and maybe a few seconds of wot ever now and then, and still have about 1/4 tank left. Newer I/Os are pretty efficient, and I'm sure newer four stroke O/Bs are about the same.

BUT, an 88 hp O/B, or an I/O is going to consume more gas than a 50 hp, so you are going to be spending more on gas. It's a price to pay if you want more power.
I'd rather go for the I/O because an 88 hp on a 18ft bayliner seems underpowered (this is solely my opinion), but if you are happy with your boat and the way it performs, why not keep it? :)

Fuel efficiency only comes into play when you use large amounts of fuel a season. Most do not use enough fuel in a season to warrant the discussion. If it is a carbed outboard, figure a 20% improvement with the I/O.

To put things into perspective, if you use $200 of fuel a year, you are talking $200 verse $240 a year. Is that a deal breaker?

Good job Whitney!

Welcome aboard if nobody has said so to you yet. Obviously you are a newbie here, seems it's usually left up to me to post actual data on fuel consumption then have everyone tell me how wrong I am! :D

It seems many people find it much more useful if you would post something like "my 3.0L will run 4.5 hours at WOT without refueling and I only have a 16 gallon tank". I personally have never figured that one out when a 3.0 burns about 10 GPH at WOT, but hey, whatever makes people happy!

The boat in your sig looks like it burns about that much fuel in a day. I'm not arguing with you, fuel economy should be way down the list when considering a new boat. I purchase about 500 gallons of fuel a season (~100 hours), and I doubt I am in the high range.
