whats the proper way to mount a 10 horse

i have 14 ft aluminum boat. i just put in a new transom board. i'm very sure that i tightened the clamps down tight enough.
last weekend my motor jumped off the transom. luckly i was able to hold on to the tiller handle & keep my motor. i didnt bottom the motor out or hit it on any thing. obviously i am missing something.

Welcome to iboats.

You sound like you got lucky! I would safety chain or cable the motor. It probably jumped up at an angle and lifted off the transom.

Some people pit a small metal strip to grab the motor clamps..... the engine was not as tight as you thought.

The torque and prop direction cause it to left and on a turn the forces are very hard...... then surprise .....oh you know that.

On a fresh transom, the first time you clamp into it, the wood compresses a bit. Running it a bit will further that compression. Eventually the wood hits a point where it no longer compresses. Still a good idea to check the clamp screws frequently and to chain your motor...

You can also put a lock through the holes. That will give you the added benefit of a little bit of theft prevention.

I have my 10 hp bolted in addition to a lock on the clamps.

Under ideal conditions clamps hold a 10 horse on just fine.
I decided to bolt it just for the added insurance in case
I hit something at speed.

I use a Yamaha T9.9 high thrust on my boat and I always use the holes provided to bold it to the motor mounting plate. Even after a year installed, I was checking things the other day and got almost 1/2 turn on the lugs that are designed to be hand tight. That is a little inconvenient if you remove the motor after the day. The idea of a small piece of metal sounds feasible if you remove it all the time. Definitely use a safety chain.

make sure your transom board is thick enough to not allow your clamp screws to bottom out in their thread , or maybe in you case get close to bottoming out...your tansom should be thick enough you can see a few threads on the clamp screw on the outside near the turning lever.....
