Whats the salvageability of this MC-1 upper?

As I work through the mechanicals I decided to disassemble the uppers from my 1972 Bertram project. MC-1 165's. I watched some online videos and studied seloc and the fsm. My spanner came today so I took it apart. Got everything but the larger driveshaft seal apart. Here are the pictures. Not overly optimistic about it at this point.

Lower seal, the mangled part was just floating in there:

Gear assembly and roller bearing assembly. Looks like it has been hot.

Outer race of lowest roller bearing on driveshaft:

Roller bearing looks like it has been spinning due to discoloration?

Since the plastic water pocket cover is melted I am willing to bet that the 4 mounting screws are not going to come out and will break off which is the death knell for a driveshaft housing. If that was not the case it would be possible to rebuild the housing with all new internals. What is the spline count on the vertical shaft?

13. I’ll try to break those cover screws on Monday. I’m away from the house

the worst part is the top cap bearing and race, you can replace them and not have to worry about the gear height. you will need to check the driveshaft preload and possibly adjust the shims under the top cap race

everything else looks normal for a 48 year old merc drive, clean up the seal surfaces really good and they should be fine

good luck on the water passage pocket removal, heat the bolts prior to removal

if the input shaft bearing race were spinning the casing would be destroyed, it's either stained or heat has caused the discoloration

don't forget to grab the spacer and shims from the input shaft seat
