it is in my aluminum boat, under the hood, above where your feet are when in the front row seats.

that's flotation...if'n your boat takes on water aluminum will sink...with the foam in the bow or anywher for that matter you will still have something to hang onto if such a disaster happens...just a thought :)

Aluminum doesn't float, on it's own. Without foam, it would sink like a stone, if swamped.

Its so that no matter how bad a leak you have and your bilge pumps fail,

if you remember what your bowlight looks like,,,,,
you can still find your boat on the lake or at the dock.

well, that's what i figured. i supose i should put it back in when i put the boat back together. its all these little squares that became nests of all sorts of little creatures over the years. disgusting. i was thinking i would replace it with that foam used for gaps when insulating/fireproofing houses (often coming in an aresol can). any thoughts on this?

Adam, The spray foam will work. Use the maximum expanding kind. The problem is that the volume in those little cans is small. There is two-part pour in foam available in marine stores, in quarts and more. You need to have a framed space to pour it into, however. If you want to put it under the gunwales, and the boat is light enough to be turned over and supported on saw horses, maybe you could frame a space for the pourable foam. If not, styrofoam comes in blocks, sheets etc, at local home supply centers. You can use some adhesive or epoxy to attach it.
