i recently began restoring my old 1996 suzuki dt40 outboard. im starting with the water pump, carb, and fuel pump. when i removed the water pump and gasket ... underneath looks pretty nasty. its gunked up and dirty but i cant really tell whats under it. if its plastic parts then i think it looks all melted together. i dont wanna start chipping away at it if its gonna cause more problems. whats supposed to be directly under the water pump?

You need to find a parts breakdown of your motor to look at.
And a Service manual

Should be a seal/bearing housing under the water pump

drive shaft looks corroded along with everything else. did this motor go under water for some period of time

No the engine from what i know did not go under water. The lower unit prob has been under water but isnt that acceptable. It has been sitting in my yard for years. On the back of my boat. Was there for hurricane sandy. But the water just lifted the boat.

I have a shop manual. I have the diagram. I dont want to break anything trying to remove the pieces beneath the water pump. It seems to be shifting fine. Should i bother trying to replace all that mess?

If shifting OK, shafts turn smoothly, and no water in lower unit I would not take it apart.
But I would try to clean it up some,
I cannot tell much from the pic

from what i hear now(new information), before engine was taken off boat years back. when running.... it would pop into forward by itself, while idleing in neutral. would that be anything caused inside the gearcase(below water pump)... my father said a friend/mechanic said it was a pin that kept popping out, and that he doesnt really remember but he doesnt think it was in the lower unit. hes pretty clueless but i am trying to figure this out and go about it the right way. i am also new at this, bought a shops manual and trying to figure this out and LEARN something at the same time!
