What's Wrong With Me?

It is Labor Day weekend and I've got my motor apart for some work and also doing some maintenance work on my boat. I'm thinking that I should be upset that I'm not out boating/fishing - but I'm not. I just realized that I enjoy working on/fixing/upgrading my boat as much as I enjoy the actual boating experience.

Do I still qualify to participate in this Forum?

Of course you do!
I think a lot of guys on here enjoy tinkering around. I know I do.
There is pleasure in doing work, particularly optional hobby stuff.

I hope you do still qualify because I'm the same way
There are some days when I'm much happier just messing around with it and taking it out just seems like too much trouble :(
Maybe it's an end- of- season thing? Any psychiatrists reading this?

A well maintained boat is a dependable boat!

You don't want to be out there on the water with all of the holiday idgit galoots anyway, your time will be better spent doing what you're doing.

What's wrong with you is that like me, you are retired!
No place to go and all day to get there. When you get up in the morning you have nothing to do. Once you do that, you can rest up from it. Every day is Saturday.

Fact is: Since you can boat any day, it does not have the urgency, especially on amateur day weekend. Aint it great?

Well, you are ahead of me . . . I am still in the process of buying a boat.

10-4 on happy to be retired and not have to take our boat out only on certain days during the week .... yesterday (Sunday) I drove by the large lake west of here and take about covered up ........ boats were everywhere and their wakes had the surface really chopped up .... only the largest cruisers seemed to be operating with any sort of stability

I say you more than qualify. Nothing about boating is turn-key; it all takes effort, which increases the reward. The frustrated boaters are the ones who expect (or the salesman told them) it to be easy, no effort, no hassles, no mechanical problems, and then they find it ain't so.
I was brought up that you work first and then enjoy what you worked for, or worked on. It increases the enjoyment, and makes the work more tolerable.
I get about 2 hours of boat riding for each hour of working on them, it seems.

I've not boated on long weekends in almost 15 years. Why put up with it if you don't have too.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

Well, from a not-quite-retired-yet boater's perspective, I love working on my boat! The thing that bugs me the most is having to take 5 straight days off from boating to work. Of course, without work, I wouldn't be able to go out or even afford to work on my "investment". And a big +1 on being out on the lake with 5 million other boats. We went out Saturday, the whole family. It was fun, but yeah everybody's butt was sore by the end of the day from bouncing off wakes and waves. Next time I'm gonna try to plan for the weekend before a major holiday.

Re: What's Wrong With Me?

My weekend was spent prepping the interior for paint, and then the actual painting. My boat hasn't seen water except for rain and snow since I bought it- over four years ago. So go ahead, throw me out!
