Hi, I am new at power boating but have purchased a 12' aluminium car topper boat. I think I need to upgrade the 15 hp Chrysler motor (like new) due to unavailable parts and service. I will fish gentle stretches of California Central Valley Rivers (Sacto. & Feather) for Stripers and Salmon. I am close to 275 lbs. and 6'2". Most likely I will have a friend along about 3/4 my size.
I am wonderring if a 9.9 hp. or similar would do at a lower price, an important consideration for a retired guy. Should I try for a domestic brand (are there any?) or Japanese? What's up with 2-cycles being phased out in Calif? Is that true? I don't like the bulk of 4 cycles I've seen.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Howdy, Freerider.

First, read the plate in your boat for load and HP maximum ratings. I suspect that you are looking at maybe 350lb and 9.9HP. Do not exceed either.

You are talking about putting over 600lb in a 12' boat, once you include engine, fuel, tackle, etc.

There is zero chance that an engine within USCG max HP rating is going to plane that load, even if it is as high as 15hp.

Maybe I'm way off base, check the plate and let us know.

Good luck. :)

I agree with JB: you need to either lose lots of weight, lose a fishing partner and/or move up in boat size.
Sell the boat for something bigger (15'+) for your own safety as well as your fishing partners; it's no fun being nervous when you're trying to have fun!

Re: What's your choice?

Hi, thanks for the advice to both who replied. I checked the plate and it has 18 hp and #800 limits. My question is about putting a boat on plane. Is this something I need to worry about on short trips? I suspect planning gets you there quicker, but as most of the women of my acquaintence have told me; "you never got in a hurry about anything in your life". Are there safety factors involved?
Thanks, Freerider

Hi Freerider

I think i would give the Chrysler a try. Most of the parts ( if not all )needed for regular maintenance are available, do a search for Chrysler here and you will find lots of links among the threads. Chrysler always offered a very favourable Weight/Power rate. If the motor is OK, has low hours and well maintained, why thrash it ? the small Chryslers do not have taht bad rep. Get hold of someone who knows what he (she ? ) is doing and give it a check. Good luck
