I have a 20 foot 2 inch falcon thunderbird cuddy boat(1995).It has normal car tires on the trailer with drum brakes(yuk). It has 2 tires. I have the 1 side off but the bearing is destroyed. The washer and spindle nut is all i have. Without taking the other side off, what size bearing kit should i get?

Re: wheel bearing sizes

Justice, you should start a new thread for your question. You will get way more answers.

You need to take the other side off to get your answer unless you can get the bearing numbers off the existing bearings. Probably should be doing the other side anyway for maintenance purposes..

There are 2 bearings, inner and outer. For each measure the diameter of the axle where it mounts, and the inside diameter of the hub where each have the outer race pressed into... Take those numbers to the nearest bearing shop (or trailer parts shop) and they will be able to give you the right bearings. Alternatively, do as Bruce suggests... And his other suggestion of doing both sides, is not so bad.... I would also suggest you find out why the bearing failed (water ingress, lack of grease, etc) and fix the reason as well as the symptom... And fit 'bearing buddies'...

Chris......

You also want to replace the races whenever you replace the bearings. You need to knock those out to get the numbers.

Knock them out? I'm sure you mean press them out, right Bruce... ;)

I use a punch or drift.

7. Remove the inner and outer wheel bearing race
a. Use a press or drift pin and hammer to remove the race from the hub.
b. Do the same with the outer wheel bearing race by turning the hub over.

I use this to install them.

a thought.. " it has normal car tires" ? sounds like a single axle system, you might want to consider "trailer tires" too... they are made with thicker sidewalls to handle the load.. Car tires are for cars, trailer tires are for trailers.......just a suggestion.....

Okay my .01 1/2 cents worth. Remove the other side, probably needs servicing anyways, and remove all the bearings AND races AND seals, then take them to any auto parts store and buy new ones. Then clean up the axle shafts and look for any problems. Hopefully there isn't anything major. Then repack the bearings and reassemble the hubs again and maybe even install some type bearing buddy system and finish filling the grease in the hubs. Then you are set to go again. Wheel bearings are not expensive at all and are a good way to improved the trailer pulling experience...

well said....... best way to instill a proactive maintenance mindset when it comes to trailers is to blow bearings or tires on the interstate because of a lack of maintenance or wrong tires on the rig.... In my line of work, we have the "7 P's of Court"... "Proper Prior Preparation Prevents a **** Poor Performance" applies to lots of things....

You said "the bearing is destroyed. The washer and spindle nut is all i have" Before you even think of buying bearings you better check the spindle real good to make sure it is not damaged to bad. You might need to replace the complete axle or at least the spindle if it is chewed up to much from towing with destroyed bearings or no bearings.

Very good point there ken51k. If he really had nothing left, that axle spindle it gone for sure. But I can't see how that wouldn't have been extremely noticeable with the tire/wheel assembly sitting slanted then. If either inner or outer bears were gone...powdered, toast, then there had to be evidence just looking at the tire/wheel...
