I was coming home after a nice weekend on the water and one of the wheels on my tandem wheel trailer started smoking. jacked the trailer up and the wheel just fell off! there is some wear right beside the nut. I was hoping to fit new bearings but have a feeling i'm looking at a whole new axle? if I got a new axle maybe that's a good thing because the electric brakes are in sad shape anyway

Re: wheel fell off

today I went to get some parts at a trailer shop , the parts man gave me the heads up that my trailer has obsolete tapered bearings and said the company has been out of business for over 20 years and there are no parts available, ended up getting a used hub with bearings for $70 that fixed the wheel. selling my trailer to someone that just needs one to haul out boats or something.

Re: wheel fell off

You might look into getting a new axle. I am thinking of doing the same for my older trailer. I called Redneck Trailer and my single 3500lb axle with grease zert and 5 lug hubs is only $145. Hubs are $45 each if bought without axle. My axle isn't setup with brakes, but I wouldn't think they would add that much cost.

Just a thought....

I am not picking on anybody here, but whenever I see one of these "wheel fell off" threads I post this pic:

My wife came out of this with nothing more than a scratch and a bunch of teeny tiny glass shards all over her . . . this was a loose wheel on an older Toyota pickup going the oppositie way on Interstate 15. Estimated impact speed was a combined 120 MPH. The officer told us this happens often and that it is commonly fatal. Keep those bearings lubed up and the wheels tight guys ;)

Re: wheel fell off

Glad to hear your wife was ok. I know I'm lucky this happened while in town and moving slowly. I normally tow my boat 90 miles to the lake I like, due to rain/flooding my last trip was cancelled. I think I am lucky it was!!

The part that still gets me on mine is that I had just lubed the axles for the 2nd time this season and never saw any noticeable issue. There was some grease on wheel, but that is something I get often with bearing buddies, so never thought much about it.
