Model #25553B
Serial# 0002586

When the thermostat opens I see a heavy discharge of what I believe to be steam ( combined with exhaust) leave the exhaust "hole". The motor starts and runs fine. IS the "momentary blast of steam" an early indication of T-stat failure? I can hold my hand on the powerhead without burning it after the T-stat opens. I can also troll all day without any problems. Is my thermostat trying to warn me?

If you can hold your hand on the powerhead, I wouldn't sweat it. I think the steam is caused by the water first getting to the heat of the exhaust stack when the thermostat opens. I'll bet it only lasts a few seconds and is replaced by the usual water, right?

This just doesn't sound like a problem to me.

That was my knee-jerk thought process as well but....

4 Miles offshore in Saginaw Bay, end of November-28 MPH winds, 4-7 ft seas, is no place to find that a $12.00 part has left you adrift. When a thermostat does fail will it leave the water passage open?

Hey, if you're at all worried about it, replace the silly thing. It's cheap, and if you're in salt water, it can't hurt.

Parts that cost under $20 are expendable, from my point of view. If you have a question about it, at all, pop a new one in there.

If your asking are they failsafe, definitely not. Sometimes they don't seal, sometimes they don't close. Annual replacement is the best insurance.

One other thought: If you're going to be in that situation often, you really ought to have some kind of reliable kicker motor for safety's sake. I wouldn't go 4 miles offshore without one at any time, not even on a lake. I use a high-thrust electric trolling motor, and it has gotten me back to the ramp a couple of time.

If it is not fail safe then for the 12 bucks I should not have anything to worry about. I'm trying to find a 4 horse OMC with remote tank for just that reason!

Sounds like the best idea to me. If you get a small OMC outboard, your regular hose should hook right up. Look at the 6 horse ones. They're pretty darned reliable, and would push your boat a little better, I'd think. There are lots of them around.

What size boat do you have this on?

You wrote: "4 Miles offshore in Saginaw Bay, end of November-28 MPH winds, 4-7 ft seas, is no place to find that a $12.00 part has left you adrift."

That is no water to be in in a small boat with a 25 Evinrude. A 4 hp OMC would be useless in that kind of water.

To answer your question; pellet type (with the spring) thermostats fail in the closed position.
