I have an I6 and I have read about the 165 4 cyc as a trouble engine (470). WOuld the i6 have more torque than the 4? I would assume so.

I would assume so, too......
To answer your post topic, the 4cyl Merc & it's various mutations began production in the mid 70's to 1989, I believe......
The GM I6/165 & the Merc I4/165 have very little in common other than they are both 4 cycle engines.....
The I6 is a far more reliable engine, IMHO.......:)

The 470 style engine came out in 1976, but the ones known as the 165 were only in 1987.
The inline 6 model known as a 165 went from 1970 to 1981.

Ayuh,....

I dare say, the 2 motors have only 2 things in Common,....
Both are rated at 165hp,+ Both use the same outdrive Gear Ratio....

I would pick an I6 anyday!

My previous boat (a 1966 MarkTwain 230cu-in 150hp Mercruiser bought new by "DAD") lasted almost 39 trouble free years! All I did was replace the raw water pump and the coupler! The coupler lasted 38 years!

Cheers,

I figure I will grab one of the 470 powered boats and swap engines/drives.

Ayuh,....

You'll need Everything forward of the Inner transom Plate,....... I Think.......

I'm not sure if the motor mount Spacing is the same between them or not,... The Chevy/ Alpha is 15".....
And, the bolt pattern of the Downpipe may not be the same...... Not sure...

I Think the flywheel covers are Different,.... Not Sure though......

Other than moving the front motor mount,... It outta be a pretty simple swap,......

Make sure you come back here,+ Tell Us how it Fits,.......;)

Yepper! Thats a smart move. IMO. the ole stvebolt L6 is bullet proof "they say," We'll see cause mine is coming along great. Simple, reliable, economical, Why do they try to fix something that works perfectly fine? They think it's an improvement! 470 ? haha! "NOT" ;)

I love my 73 Glassmaster's I6 250 ci engine. I know them to be super reliable and easy to work on since my first truck had basically the same engine. Great engines IMHO.
