When "Woman" Helps

Yesterday I was doing some glass work and sanding prep for painting the cabin. ‘Woman’ wanted to help. Ok. I’m on top of the cabin, facing the stern, busy with a random orbit sander when ‘woman’, giving in to her genetically programmed predisposition to “clean” (cook and serve), drags the little ShopVac on wheels up there to rid the work area of all the dust. She’s behind me, sucking up dust, feeling helpful. A big party boat passes by. Wake. Unbeknown to me, woman skittles off the cabin top. The boat rocks, I turn to see if woman is ok. She’s gone and the ShopVac is on the move. Couldn’t get to it in time. R2D2 takes the plunge into the S.F. Bay. I look back at my work area. Something doesn’t look right. There is an empty socket in the GFIC where something else once was plugged in. Quick survey reveals a missing variable speed close quarter drill and a $15 3M RoLoc. Tangled cords can do that. I guess R2D2 took a friend with him. I look back at the bay. ShopVac’s have the motor on top. Being top heavy they immediate flip over when they hit the water. It floats. I fish R2D2 out. I keep looking at the bay as if the Milwaukee close quarter drill will come floating by, too. No such luck, but there goes the $7 roll of blue masking tape, just out of reach. The tape has limited floatation and soon the roll of tape joins the drill on the bottom of the bay. I go to buy another drill, $150. I tell ‘woman’ she has to buy the beer. She does, but she drinks it all.

It’s just after 11am. Woman has an idea, “let’s go work on the boat!” Dog looks at woman, looks at me. He knows, too!!! “Yes, dear, good idea! I’ll be ready in 5-mins.”

My "Woman" is a great big help when it comes to working on my boats......

She is standing right here too so don't expect me to say anything but what I said above.

Boomyal - I flooded it with fresh water as soon as I pulled it from the bay.

Charlie – No, I did not try out the ShopVac, yet. Checked it today and decided it might be a good idea to let it finish dripping water before I plug it in. I’ll get woman to plug it in. She’s forgetten about it by now. :)

Elk Chaser – hang in there, buddy. Hint: DO NOT tell woman about the electric sander and DO NOT let her know where the 60 grit paper is. You will be doing epoxy filling for weeks.

You described in pretty good detail your response & reactions regarding the overboard tools. Just out of curiosity, at what point (if any) during all of this did you check on overboard Woman, lol?

Lakelivin – since you asked, yes, I did look to see if woman was floating…after I surveyed the loss of tools. Yeah, kinda feel a little guilty about that. But she can’t swim and I know there would have been a lot of screaming and splashing if she had gone in too. Good news!!! I plugged the ShopVac in today and it works!!! :) Just a couple more days and I should have the epoxy patchwork done on woman’s 60-grit foray. Bought her a book. Now she sits in the cabin and reads. Things are progressing a little faster…tools are safe, too. :D

I tried the broken tools gig on my wife using the GPS screen was too small to see. It worked! She made an eye exam appointment for me. It wasn't Dr. Garmin either. Hey ! What kind of shop vac was it?

Nyminute - ShopVac is a brand name. It’s a little 2-gal, 7-amp, wet/dry critter I picked up at Costco for about $30. If you are going to start throwing you power tools into the bay, think safety! All the AC electrical on the boat is fully protected with breakers and GFIC. I plug another 16-in GFIC protected extension into the end of the extension cord. Puts GFI protection right at the end of the tool. All that is held in place at the work area with one or two 50-lb lead weights. No tool can reach the water when plugged in. For the power tools to go in, they have to unplug themselves on the way...and as I learned, they will.

Re: When "Woman" Helps

Those "portable" gfi's are supposed to be plugged into the outlet, not the cord. Not exactly sure why.

Re: When "Woman" Helps

RNSI - What I have is a 16-inch extension cord with a re-settable GFI head molded in at the female plug. The extension cords are also available in 3ft, 12ft, 20ft extensions; all have the GFI at the female end. They are weatherproof, silicone covers on the reset and test buttons, heavy duty, well made, and not inexpensive.

If only the end with the male plug hits water, there is no GFI protection in the cord but there is on the boat. With that in mine, and for that reason, you would only want to plug your cord directly into a wall socket if it is your only GFIC.

ALDO – been there!!! You are dead on correct. Literally took months of negotiations. The boat, originally white, was talked down from 100% deep red back to white with an orange top. Even the decks, non-skid, everything...woman wanted deep red! Yikes!

White, red, deep red, orange??? I wish!

Negotiations are currently centred around aubergine (what the h*ll is aubergine) and 'mustard yellow'. I may have to call the lawyers in on this one. Pray for me.

Aldo

Dunno, Aldo. It sounds like it’s French. I’d be scared, too. :)
