I've been doing hours of research trying to figure out why the hydraulic motor runs but the trim wont go down. I think it has to do with the check valves from everything I read. I just don't know where they are located as I'm new to all this.

Re: Where are the hydraulic trim's check valves?

Its a 96 wellcraft excel i/o mercruiser V6 vortex. I tried using the trouble shooting but i'm not really getting anywhere. Up works every time, when I hit the down button the hydraulic motor sounds like its running but the trim won't go down. If I keep clicking it over and over and over it'll finally start to drop. The other day I started turning the large bolts on the side, a little hydraulic fluid leaked out (tspn) I tightened everything back up and she worked first try, then didn't work again. So I when back and moved the bolt again, and she moved again first try but again wouldn't move after that. The hydraulic fluid is a pinkish white, which I feel is a bad thing. Should I drain it and put in new fluid or oil?

I have almost the same boat. If it has the same pump as mine, the pilot operated check valves are screwed into the pump. All of this is inside the plastic reservoir. There is a single screw on the bottom of the reservoir that holds the reservoir to the pump. Can you show us which bolt you turned?

I know this is old, but the bolts I turned are the big silver ones on the side of the "J1171"..

J1171 is just an indication that the device is approved for marine use.

Sounds like you're suffering from the classic trim ram disease, corroded end caps. Try standing on the drive while someone presses the DOWN button. If that works replace the trim ram end caps....

J1171 is a spec. number that says the pump is safe to be used in the engine compartment of the boat, and will not ignite any gas fumes that may be present.

You mentioned your trim oil was pink. That indicates you have water in the oil, too much water can damage the pump. That has to be fixed first.
Which drive do you have, Alpha or Bravo? There are pressures checks that can be done to test the pump.

Its an alpha, I tried having someone stand on it with while i pushed the down button didn't help, I just drained the fluid and put oil in instead after taking the pump apart. Tried again and same result. I'm prob just going to buy a new pump on craigslist and see if that does anything.

It's an Alpha I Gen II drive. Those pumps are expensive, here is a link to the OEM service manual. Might want to give the Troublshooting section and the Trim Pump section a read before you go buying a new pump. You may have changed oil in the pump, but you didn't fix the reason the water got in it to begin with. You don't want to destroy a new pump do you?

Does your pump ever get water on it? And does the cap on the reservoir have a small hole in the top of the cap?
