posted August 01, 2005 11:27 PM
-------------------------------------------------------------

from previous thread-------------------
almost certainly the ESA is not working right. Adjust if it is functioning. Replace if not. Test by starting engine and activate the ESA by pushing the switch lever with your finger. If the engine slows the ESA is OK and needs adjusting, if it doesnt slow the engine the switch wiring or ESA needs to be replaced

my response;

i held my finger on switch and it did not do anything. any ideas where to get this switch i can not find it.

Search this site. There is a Cherry Switch mentioned in several of the threads which is the same OMC replacement for about $12 or $15 dollars. If you need an ESA, I recommend the CDI/Rapair 123-9898-P because it is compatible with the electronic module if you ever want to upgrade. Google search the CDI part and CDI name. I found it on line for $57.

No the Cherry Switch IS EXACTLY the OMC replacement directly from the maker of the switch and the CDI ESA is compatible with the original ESA on the 88 OMC drive including the overstroke switch. You said you have an OMC drive but you did not say what year. I know this works for late 80s but maybe you have a significantly different year. On mine it all plugs directly into the existing connectors, plugs and mounting brackets. I did it.

And here is a link to the ESA. It looks exactly like the original OMC. Go to MArine is the place I bought mine but I did find it some where else cheaper later.

go2marine.com/g2m/action/GoBPage/id/90470F/omc_shift_assist_module_cdirapair.html

Re: where can i find esa module? for 2.3 omc

thanks,

mine is a 1987 2.3 bayliner 1750 capri. It has a few problems the shifter issue is one of them I've been going through the engine also trying to figure out why it keeps sputtering and dying when i get going. I'll tell you all about this so by chance you have any helpful ideas.......I've posted a few times with no luck. it runs great just like it shifts great when it is sitting in my driveway with a hose hooked up. I've changed out the condensor, rotor checked fuel lines, I am finally giving up and taking it to a mechanic which i hope they can figure it out. It is weird because it drives around about five minutes sometimes fine then it boggs out and starts like choking and if i do not cut it all the way down to idle it will die, but it does not die if i get back to idle.....

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I bought this boat for a 1,000 and have already sunk 2,500-3,000 in it.

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Did you check the fuel pump pressure, change the fuel filter and sererator, clean and check the antisiphon valve and pick up tube abd screen. There is also a remote chance the fuel tank vent is clogged. This can let the engine run fine for several minutes and then seem like you ran out of gas. These are all fairly easy, cheap things to check or fix. I had a bad bogging issue so I just replaced all of the above items in addition to a good tune. They all helped and several guys on this site have fixed their bnogging stalling issues with these things.

By the way, if all of the above are proven to be functioning 100% then it time to start checking things like compression. MAybe you can give this list to your mechanic so he doesn't forget some of these simple things before you start major engine testing and repair.

Re: where can i find esa module? for 2.3 omc

I put a seperate gas tank on and it did the same thing. I did notice there is fuel or oil in my plastic tube coming off my fuel pump going to the carb., and the manual says change if this happened. I was going to ask mechanic about this. you ever have this happen to fuel pump. I was thinking of changing the coil. I have been reading all the other threads and thought this might work, but one mechanic said if the coil is not leaking I should not have to change it. then another mechanic I talked to said I should change it so I am kind of confused on that.

Definately a bad thing if there is fuel in the clear tube. You should change the pump and that will likely fix things. Hard to tell on the coil. Leaking is a SURE sign the coil is bad but non leaking coils have been known to be bad too. From what you have said, I'd start with the fuel pump and see if the problem is fixed. By the way, the easiest check for the coil is to "borrow" a known good one and try it out. If that fixes the issue you know what to do. Maybe your mechanic has a spare you could try.
