for a 1971 135 hp. it's probably the motor but i'm not sure. it still makes noise but doesn't lift. i'd like to find maybe a reasonable rebuilt or something. any ideas where to check would be appreciated

sea star, if you already have a PT&T system on that engine...lets try to fix the problems that exist...how mechanically inclined are you..?...I have pumps and replacement parts, but it's best to fix what you have...complete TESTED working systems are way expensive...Me and a lot of other people here on iboats knows all about these systems...Does the pump sound like it's spinning...or do you just get a "click"...we can start there..

Did you check to see if the resevoir has oil in it?

thanks for the replies. it actually does sound the motor is spinning, kind of a winding noise with little screeches here and there. And i don't even know where the oil goes or where to put it in I'm embarrassed to say. I would like to get it fixed cuz i already miss having it

I agree with Chris....mine didn't work when I bought my boat as well...and it was due to no oil in the pump housing. On mine there are two screws on the top of the unit. One is for filling with oil and the other is a vent. One of the guys here on the forum suggested using SAE 30 NON DETERGENT oil from Autozone. I filled up mine and it works great.

Thats right, on the front right corner of the reservoir there's 2 screws...one sets just below the other, the lower one is the fill hole...and as stated previously, the upper one is the vent for the reservoir...fill it with the 30w nondetergent just till the fluid touches the bottom of the hole...you will need to locate the bleeders (one up and one down bleeder screw on each ram) these can be identified by the "straight" screwdriver head...(there is some "allen head set-screws" by the bleeder screws...thats NOT the bleeders) the "down" bleeder screw is on top of the rams and the "up" bleeder screw location is the side of the ram facing towards the transom...once you verify fluid level, slightly open the "down" bleeders on the top of the rams...Using your controller push the "down" button, don't just hold the button in...pulse it, 2-3 seconds on and let up and do it some more..till you see fluid and air coming out of the bleeder...the bleeders don't need to be opened to far, they don't have many threads...a couple of turns out should be plenty to pass the air and fluid...do this and see what happens...if it starts to pump fluid to the rams you will hear the pump start to "tighten up"...tells you its starting to pump fluid..

Re: where can i get a new trim/tilt??

I need to add something else here...i see a lot of Power trim questions and answers, but i have not seen this addressed: That vent screw...it has a neoprene umbrella gasket, the vent hole in the reservoir that it covers sets at about 8 o'clock under that gasket (looking at the front of the reservoir)...the vent hole is about the size of a "push-pin" (like you'd use on a bulletin board)...the vent hole must be clean, DO NOT over-tighten the vent screw because the reservoir needs to breath...if the vent screw is too tight it will pressurize the inside of the reservoir because the air cannot escape...that can cause a lot of problems...it can blow the o-rings, force fluid into the armature area, cause the system to jerk when lifting or lowering the motor...Just wanted to share that for those that don't know...

That's good knowledge...that is probably why mine leaks like a sieve. Just remember to use NON DETERGENT oil.

Re: where can i get a new trim/tilt??

ok, one more stupid question. I assume I need a bottle with a small nozzle to "squeeze" the oil in? Are we talking "trim & tilt fluid" that wal-mart has? It says on it hyraulic fluid. Is this the same as the 30w you're talking about? I saw some of that in a regular bottle. thanks again

Re: where can i get a new trim/tilt??

I would imagine that oil is ok sea star...if it says for tilt & trim...the label on the pumps just says use 30w non detergent...some people use power steering fluid, i don't...BTW, if you don't know the answer to something it's not a stupid question...what would be stupid is to NOT ask...and thats funny, you asked about filling it...i rebuild and sell these pumps and the worst thing is to have to fill it...i just use a tiny funnel and take my time...the vent hole is no help, you just have to let a little air past the funnel...ALSO, when you fill the reservoir, the motor must be in the full up position...you might have read that but i have to say it because it would be bad to over fill it...

Not a good idea to mix different types of fluids. Try to identify what is in the reservoir now. Chances are it is either SAE 30motor oil or tranny fluid. If you have to, you can drain and refill with the fluid of your choice.

It seems those systems run on almost any fluid :D

Draining and refilling is a PIA, since it is hard to drain the cylinders. Just get a sample of what it already in there. If it is clear red, fill aith Dextron II ATF. If it is clear brown, fill with 5W-30 motor oil.

Re: where can i get a new trim/tilt??

BTW sea star...there is a "lube" tool offered that fills the lower units and the power trim pumps...i got to thinking about this after your post about filling the pump reservoir...i've been doing it the hard way...the tool isn't but about $10 bucks...i will be buying one...thanks for making me think about that issue...

If i've said it once, i've said it a thousand times...the iboats forums are the BEST...REMEMBER THIS: Education is expensive, but here on iboats, it's free! This site has helped me so much...infact, without iboats forums, i would literally be "up sh!t creek" without a paddle...Can't thank the people on this site enough...
