I have come across an exceptionally nice 82 bayliner that has the volvo 125. The owner has said that there is quite a bit of water in the oil so I figure if I plan for the worst then I'll know weather I should run away or not. I have done some looking around but I can't seem to find any used engines.

If the boat wasn't priced at a song and dance I wouldn't even ask but maybe this is a terrible idea anyways? I figured maybe some of you more knowledgeable than I may know.

Thanks for any help.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... I fear it will turn out to be a very Bad idea, I'm glad ya asked 1st, insteada later,.....

Yer motor is gettin' alot less common as time goes on,....
That hull is most likely full of rotten wood in the most important, 'n difficult places to get too,....

I'm Glad ya wanta become a Boater,....
Find yerself a boat powered by a Chevy based motor,... 3.0l, 4.3l, 5.0l, 5.7l,....
Don't know the liters of the I-6, 250 cid motors, but they're a Good option too, especially in yer price range,...
Point is, go Chevy power, 'n Volvo, or Mercruiser drives,...
I prefer Mercs,...

Don't buy anything that says OMC on it anywhere,....

I keep finding tons of omc stuff in my, very modest, price range, but have tried to shy away. Mostly due to what I have read on this forum. It seems to me that with my budget about 1990 is the breaker where prices make a steep turn north.

I had found an older Larson that had problems with its engine but from what I've read it's a 470 mercruiser and from what I've seen of parts there's a reason it's cheap. I suppose the hunt continues.

Apart from Craigslist and ebay are there any other good places to look for an, ahem, well broke in rig?

I don't min it needing a few weeks of tlc and such but I already have a project car as well.....

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't even think of the boat shop. In my younger days I bought plenty of cars from the car lot that were "out back"

I enjoy working on engines, etc and have had a quite a few projects. My current boat in fact has a Volvo Penta. If I had it to do over again, I would not have made the purchase. Volvo stuff is CRAZY EXPENSIVE. They run good and work well. But they cost crazy money when they break. I too suggest you look for something with a Mercruiser. Especially if you are on a budget. (And yes, stay away from the 470).
