Where do I find the engine Serial number?

I have just purchased a used Mercury 150 HP 1500 motor that I think is a mid to late 1970's model. Where do I find the serial number so that I can verify the year of manufacture, etc.? Also, what would be the best size and pitch prop for this engine?

If that motor is an inline six, it is 1977 or older. Look on the transom bracket for the serial number. Most of the parts are the same on those motors from 73-77 or so. The carbs were a bit different, but interchangeable, and were the tune up parts.

Between and slightly above the transom mount handles and everything will be there, model, and serial number. Oldmercs.com is the place for parts for the older mercs. I had three old pre 74 mercs.
