Hi all

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place for this question but hear goes. My stern drive is broke down and I want to learn how to fix it myself and save a few $$$. I want to get a manual for it but there is no identification on it telling me what model/year it is. I was told the year of the boat is 1973 and it has a v8/190hp engine. Other than that, it is all I know about. How do I get the right info I need for the correct manual?

How difficult is it to pull the stern drive off?

Thanks

Try the Sealoc Manuals, available on most Boating sites.

For one thing, what make is it. OMC, Mercruiser, Volvo?
Besides that, the special tools required to rebuild a drive properly will cost more than a new drive.

There is a tag with Mercruiser on it but nothing else. When I go to these web sites, how will I know which manual to get for my stern drive or is there one manual for all drives? And what special tools are required to replace the drive that make them worth more than the drive?

thanks for your replies

Re: Where do I get stern drive manual?

Mercruiser put out only one manual for all the engines and drives for the years 1963 to 1973. If you indead have a 73 boat, and the drive and engine are original, you need service manual 90-68648. Using the Mercruiser site you would need to find a serial number, but with the site below you can order by Manual number.
Order Manual

There are a lot of special tools for the Alpha type drives. Once you find out for sure what drive you have, the manual lists the special tools you need to do the job. The tools are needed for setting the gear position and backlash measurements, taking the measurements, preload tools and ............
Click here for the complete list. It's a .pdf file and will take a while to load.
