Where does one get bottom paint at? How do you paint underneath the trailer bunkers?

I don't know anything about bottom paint. My new cabin cruiser has bottom paint that needs to be redone, but I am unsure as to how to paint around the trailer. What does the paint cost per gallon and how much boat will that cover? What does it cost to have someone else do the painting and where would I find someone to do it? I do plan on keeping this boat in a slip in a zebra muscle infested lake, so bottom paint is necessary.

Getting Boat Off Trailer

you don't need stands.

1/you can lower the tongue to the ground. i would get some 6x6 or old railroad crossties cut the +- 12 inches, now block up the transom. 2/

Raise the tongue of the trailer the back of trailer will drop away from trailer. this is the tricky part. between the cross braces of the trailer block the keel lower trailer, boat will be suspended on the blocks.

3/ pull forward, lift bow again, and reblock i a different place. repeat until trailer is out from under the boat.

4/ to reload, just reverse the procedure.

if you were just working on the bunks, or painting the bottom. you could just do the first 2 steps.

there are a lot of companies that make and sell bottom paint, even rustoleum. http://www.iboats.com/Boat_Parts_Ac...0542--submit.Search--submit.x.40--submit.y.11

Here in Charleston SC, a 21' boat will run 650.00 at most of the boat yards around here. If I were you I would let someone do it that can lift your boat off the trailer. Or you can always buy boat jack stands and lift it yourself.

This might sound crazy but would it be possible to paint the bottom ON the trailer by initially shifting it back a few inches and then painting those spots after the boat has been restored to its original position on the trailer?

Here's what I just did this weekend.

I used the tongue to the ground.........put blocks in the back....jack the tongue up way......

However i didn't want to do the extra steps of moving the trailer out from under it......so I just took the bunks off..... 4 bolts really easy..less than 10 mins extra.

That's exactly how I did my trailered 23 footer for many years. Never had any problem- unless you count getting paint on the trailer frame!

I tried the "tongue down then lift the stern" method and that didn't work. The trailer's torsion suspension simply kept the rollers hard up against the hull. I can't shift it back on the trailer, either. My boat is just too heavy to use either method.

I'm going to touch up as much as I can reach and live with it this year.

Aw come on, it's not that hard to move a boat on the trailer. All you gotta do is tie the back of the boat to something solid (I used a tree) and pull forward a foot or so. Leave the winch cable attached and LOCKED but let out enough slack move the desired distance.
I always had a roller trailer BTW. Might be a bit more difficult to move it on a bunk style trailer.

Gee, is that all I gotta do?

I don't have an accessible tree or anything else solid to hook it to when it's in my driveway.

Not enough clearance between the garage and house to move it into the backyard, where I would have access to a tree.

No good angle of attack if I were to try tying a very long line from the boat to a tree in the backyard.

Finally, not enough driveway length to squeeze a vehicle behind the boat, and tie the boat to that while I pull it from the front.

It isn't as though I haven't tried to work out the logistics of moving a 5500 lb boat back a foot or so on the trailer, but keep going- I'm listening :)

Sounds like you need to change your rollers. My boat weighs just as much as yours and it will roll back just by slacking the winch cable and lifting the front of the boat with the trailer jack.
