Where does the O-ring go?

Dropped the lower unit to correct a wiring problem in the electric shift and now I see an O-ring setting on the ground beneath the powerhead. Does this thing go on the water pump outlet or on the drive shaft below the splines. I'm guessing the top of the drive shaft, no?

If there's a little groove at the top of the drive shaft, then yes.

Yup there's a groove below the splines at the top of the shaft, it fits this groove. I should have said this is from an early 70's 50 hp. Thanks a lot. What's this o-ring do anyway?:)

It keeps water out of the splines and prevents the drive shaft from rusting into the crank.

Search around the forum for stuck lower units, and read up. You'll never forget that o-ring again.
