where does water discharge on 77 65hp

just joined the johnson family by purchasing a 1977 65hp outboard, great condition but i dont see any water discharge while hooked to the hose. my question is will it pee while hooked to just the hose, and if so where from?

were you running the motor?none of my peehole motors will shoot water unless started ,they will not pee by just sitting there with a water hose running!

yes, the motor was running. and there was a stream flowing from the front of the gear case, but a few buddies of mine said thats not the discharge

A 1977 model probably does not have a telltale.

BUT I cannot find such an animal as a 1977 65 hp to check!

What is the model number? If we know that we can check the model out!

the model # is 65ESL-72S

There is no telltale. According to the model number, this is a 72 65 hp. In 1977 these engines were rated at 70. You will find a water mist coming out of the two exhaust relief holes in the upper midsection. It will take a minute for the engine to warm up, and the stats to open-then your hand should get damp if you hold it back there long enough. That is normal.
