Hi,

Sorry poor English:
I've got a pretty old Johnson 70hp 3 cylinder outboard engine I'm fixing for a friend. I haven't a clue how old it is, by my guess is that it's from the 80s.
I have two questions I wonder if anyone here can answer:

1. Where do I fill the oil for the end shaft/propeller or whatever you say in English, i.e. the lower part of the engine?

2. I've been looking for an on-line manual to no avail. Maybe someone here knows?

Thanks in advance,
Mikke from Sweden

Mikke, as you can see from the picture you have 2 screws on the starboard(Right) side of the lower unit. Both of these screws will be SLOTTED screws. Do not remove any PHILLIPS head screws! The higher one is the vent screw and the lower one is the drain/fill screw. Remome the top screw first and then the bottom screw to drain the old fluid. After it drains and you are ready to fill it with new fluid, your new tube or bottle of fluid should have a nozzle on it to fill the unit from the BOTTOM hole until it comes out the top hole. Once it starts coming out of the top hole, replace the screw and then remove the nozzle from the lower screw hole and quickly replace that screw. Use new screw washers when you do this.

You can order a manual at the bottom of this page.

You can get a factory manual from here. You'll need to have the model number of the engine web page

The lower unit of the motor has two fill/drain screws. One just below the propshaft barrel and one just above the anti-ventilation plate.Drain old lube and refill new lube from the bottom hole until it weeps out of top hole where the screw was removed.Make sure you use new screw seals.

Thanx guys(or dames?)
Found slotted screws, loosened and drained for some 30 minutes, to get ALL oil out. Then cut nozzle on tubes, inserted at lower and filled (ca 2,5tubes) until it overflowed at top hole. Then closed and wiped...
Yours,
Mikke

Hey guys!!
Thanx again (posted one reply but it disappeared?)
..for your explicit explanations, and even drawings!!
Have now changed oil according to your instructions, and can look forward to my trip to Greece next week.
The boat in question is my landlords and I take care of it........First time engine, though...:)It shall be ready before I leave.....
My own boat is a 7-meter wooden double-ender (sw=snipa) with sidevalve fourstroke 800 cc twocyl Albin,hand-started with crank, which I run on E85(etanol 85%, gasoline15%) Also have spritsail-rig...A far cry from the aforesaid plastic boat with the old Johnson...
Happy boating!
Mikke
