I just purchased a 1960 40hp evinrude big twin. Now it has a tiller handle on it, so I am guessing it should have a pull start, correct? It is missing the pull start, flywheel and magneto plate.(i think that is what its called?). Where would I find these parts used. Thank You fgor any help!!! I only paid $90.00 for the motor hoping I did not have a fortune in it.

I'm still hoping to get TD to put a list of salvage yards in the top secret file. ;)

You can try laingsoutboards.com or tim's outboard service.

You got robbed. It should have "stator plate", flywheel, pull start and electric starter. Sounds like a parts motor. Find another one... 57'-70', 25-40 hp are all about the same.

Tim's outboard 218-682-2331. You're probably looking at some $$, even from tim's.. Too much, IMHO, to dump into an unknown. I'd sell it for parts and start over, unless it's really clean and exactly what you want.

I would at least do a compression test on it, before I put any money into it. Even though it doen't have a flywheel, you can still put a nut on for the flywheel and chuck up an extension with a socket on it.

If the compression turns out good, then I don't think you got hurt with this motor. I would also check the lower unit oil too and make sure there isn't any "milkshake" appearance.

Thanks guys for all the very helpful info. I was ready to spend money. I need to rethink everything and check it out. The motor is very clean and looks as if it was well taken care of. all the grease fittings have been greased. will take some pics. to get you guys take on it. you are the pros. I am fairly new at this. I have a 1962 evinrude 10 hp my dad gave me because it was jumping out of gear. He thought it was done considering how much parts are, so he gave it to me. I took lower unit apart and welded up the gear and ground them down, and to my surprise The motor ran like a champ and has never jumped out of gear. Since then I have been buying small evinrudes and johnsons to fix. I thought this was a good deal, but I may just stick to the small ones. Thanks for everything! You guys are super!

Well, if that motor is in clean condition, I hope you are still considering buying it at that price. Just be sure you check those two vital points being the compression and lower unit for water intrusion. Good old motors:D

I've serviced (and sold) several of those Big Twins and I love workin' on them. If you want to get parts for it without getting hit too hard, just keep it in a corner of your shop and just wait and see what kind of good deals cross your path, for the parts to make it complete. Check Ebay periodically or your local Craigslist ads.

There's been times I needed something and found it come available for dirt cheap, a few months later.:D Awww darn.
