Monday I bought a 97 hydra sports bass boat. The boat is in great shape but the lowrance depth finder which is mounted beside the windsheild is older and I figured I would replace it with a newer one. After a hour of looking for the transducer i gave up..And its not mounted externally on transom either... I figure it is mounted inside the hull somewhere when boat was built new from factory. Any ideas?

Re: Where is my transducer?????

Follow the transducer cable from the head unit. Look at the cable type then look in the bilge as most are installed there if it is a shoot through hull type. Next question -- does the existing unit work. If not, check for a dangling cable in the transom or bilge area. Look for holes in the transom where the transducer may have been mounted. Shoot through hull transducers must be located in the bilge are as too far forward would mean it wouldn't work as they can't shoot through air and the forward part of the boat is out of the water when on plane..

Re: Where is my transducer?????

On a Ranger I had, I wanted a transducer that imaged what was under me while in the forward seat. I removed a drain cover-plate and epoxy'd the transducer right under the front seat. I also had one for running which was as close to the transom as I could get and still get a clear shot to the bottom.

Remember depth finders operate on acoustics, usually 50 or 200 kHz. Unlike radio waves, they transfer sound through solids better than electric waves can so they are usually mounted where the turbulence is least and the boat material between them and the water is solid, (solid aluminum or glass) no balsa core, foam or any of that.
