Where is serial number on Mercruiser 5.0

I believe my engine has been replaced on my 1989 Chaperral with 5.0 engine. The only reason I think it's a 5.0 is because the cover over the carburetor r says so. I don't think they made that engine in 1989 but I could be wrong. From what I've seen they started in 1992 is that right. Anyway it's super clean and I don't think it's been used much. Where would I find the serial number on the engine? Did they make any other designation other than the MPI and EFI?
