I am trying to find the petcock that is supposed to be on top of my block (engine# 0D843814) to drain it for winterization. The manual states to remove the drain plug and to open the petcock. A description or picture would be much appreciated.

One on each side of the engine block, down low, about the middle. And one on the bottom of each exhaust manifold. And one on the power steering oil cooler (maybe).... Also drop the large hose off the water pump at the front, and if there isn't one on the oil cooler, pull one of the water hoses off it and drain it out...

Hang on... I think you are talking about the plugs. I found the brass plugs, but the manual states:

"remove drain plug from each exhaust manifold and exhaust elbow (port and starboard) and open cylinder block petcock on each side of the block"

There is also a picture but it only shows the plugs. What are these petcocks? Does it provide air behind water for easy drainage? Where are they?

Re: Where is the petcock?

Just opening the drains will allow the water (hopefully) to come out under gravity. One thing recommended is to make sure the drains are clear by poking with a piece of wire and a nail or small screwdriver..., just to be completely sure the water HAS drained... Some of the engines had pet-cocks, some just had brass plugs, then later Merc put blue plastic taps....

They used different ways to drain them. Mine has the blue plugs on the exhaust manifolds but brass plugs on the engine. Make sure you take the hose off at the water pump that runs from the thermostat housing too. I also drive around the block (about a mile for me with varying up and down hills) to get it all out after opening it up.
