NOT ALL STATES REQUIRE A TITLE . I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT TEXAS ,BUT HERE IN FLORIDA THEY DO . IN STATES WHERE A TITLE IS NOT REQUIRED A BILL OF SALE (NOTARIZED) IS SUFFICIENT.IF A TITLE IS REQUIRED IN YOUR STATE THEN I WOULD FIND OUT WHAT IS REQURED TO OBTAIN IT BEFORE I BOUGHT THE BOAT . IF ALL YOU HAVE TO HAVE IS A BILL OF SALE. THEN I WOULD ASK FOR A PICTURE ID, AND EITHER MAKE A COPY OF IT OR WRITE DOWN THE INFO FROM IT ON THE BILL OF SALE . JUST IN CASE THERE IS EVER A QUESTION .

Howdy, BBQ.

Not a problem. Been there.

Get a notarized bill of sale specifying model and serial number.

Take a rubbing off of the numbers plate. Take both to the courthouse and fill out an application for title. They are used to engines that didn't have or lost titles.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Lets,

I think you know the answer too. Don't touch it with a barge pole! There are too many legal, ethical and financial reasons to walk from that deal.

Re: where is the title ?????

Hey BBQ,

Texas started titling boats in the mid 1970's, I believe (I could be wrong on the year) - but it was in response to a large number of motors that were being stolen off the boats. Motors are high-doller items, many times they are worth more than the boat itself... If it has to be titled, then there's a lower chance that it'll be stolen, since the game wardens like to check your on-person paperwork. (At least in the Dallas area, they do)

My motor was given to me by my father-in-law. He bought it new back in the late '50's or early '60's - and it was never titled. When it was transferred to me - the Parks & Wildlife dept created a title for it in my name.

If it's not hot - but may have been kept by the original owner or transferred PRIOR to the law going into effect that required a title.. you "could" be okay on it...

If you know it IS hot... then I think you know what the right thing to do is...

G'Luck!
Rex S.

If you can, get a serial number off the thing and run a check on it before you buy it. No harm, No foul. Might even help somebody get their engine back if its hot.
