Where to attach chains on rear of 3.0?

I am going to (hopefully) be lifting out my 3.0 Merc today. Since I have the head off, my front lift point is not currently attached; I'll just have to use a head bolt or something to chain to.

How about for the rear? The service manual I've seen doesn't show a rear lift/chain point. Where on the rear of the engine can I attach to?

BTW: Will most standard "cherry picker" type engine hoists be adequate for the job or should I leave the hoist in the back of my truck and park next to the boat and lift it out that way? I'm just worried about getting it off the mounts and then not being able to get it over the side of the boat w/o scratching it all up.

um ....... Those are dangerous questions to answer. But you need to make sure wherever you attach the lift it's solid and the engine is balanced.

Most engine hoist will not lift high enough to get an engine over the transom, and I wouldn't think leaving the hoist in the back of the truck is a good idea either. The lifting point of the hoist boom should not extend beyond the front wheels of the hoist.

Lift using diagonal head bolt holes (left front, right rear of vice-versa). Do not use the head bolts. Rather use some regular bolts from the hardware store. Pulling sideways on the head bolts can bend them and stress them. If you had physics in HS or College, you would know the lift point on the hoist cannot be ahead of the front wheels on the hoist. The back end of the hoist will raise up. If the head is already off, a case of beer and a couple of your strongest neighbors can lift a 3.0 engine block.
