Where to begin

I'm hoping I get get some pointers as to where to begin diagnoing a problem.<br />This is my brothers 92 70 HP Johnson so symptoms are second hand but I told him I'd ask you guys.<br /><br />Motor starts fine and idles nicely, sometimes whe put in gear it will die, if he can get it to stay running, it "skips" at cruising speeds. Plus also have a tendancy to become soaked with fuel.<br /><br />Ignition? Carb ? A bit of both?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Dan

Whats the motors history? Has it been sitting? What plugs is he using? How old is the fuel? Hows the compression?

My brother has had this motor for about 4 years now, uses it every summer for ocean fishing (but he flushes it after every outing)<br />Never had any issues with it until July of this year.<br />Fuel is fresh, Cannot tell you the plugs , sorry. <br /><br />Dan
