I just bought a 68 johnson 20hp, found that the plastic black piece on the side of the fuel pump is cracked, spraying fuel out when pumped to start. I also bought a 80's evinrude 7.5, the parts look indentical. Do you have to buy the entire fuel pump to replace the plastic piece? If so, where can I find one? Would the johnson and newer evinrude have identical universal fuel pumps? Thanks!

Re: Where to find a fuel pump

I just rebuilt the pump on my 1976 20 hp and the rebuild kit included a black plastic piece that the fuel line attaches to. Is this what you require?
If you are going to take the pump apart you really should rebuild it IMO.
My rebuild kit included a small novel (instruction booklet)... Read then re read before starting the repair, this is not the easiest thing to rebuild due to specific part positions and the orientation of the fuel inlet and outlet.
Also, there are 2 springs inside that will fly out as you disassemble. My advice is to work in a small clean well lit area (not a garage) that way if you lose parts i.e. the aformentioned springs, you will have a better chance of finding them. I did a lot of swearing during my rebuild, hope yours goes more smoothly.

laingsoutboards.com is a good source for parts for the older stuff, give them a try.

yes, I'm only wanting the black plastic piece that the fuel line attaches to, not sure if you have to buy the entire pump just to get it.

I had a 1969 20 horse a few years back and bought a new fuel pump for around $50. I was told it was not rebuildable. Should be similar to yours. It might be worth the extra to buy a new one and not have to rebuild. I have never rebuilt one so I don't know how big a hassle that is.

looks like I was way off, the brp parts diagram says it's the the fuel filter cap, part 59, the black plastic piece that the fuel line attaches to first.

And the filter cap is indeed replaceable without monkeying around with the rest of the pump. No more difficult than cleaning the filter screen.
